A woman holds a forearm plank on a dark mat in a bright living room, her body in a long straight line from her head to her bare heels. She rests on one forearm and on a black prosthetic forearm and hand, which is strapped on just below her elbow. She has short, curly, teal hair and a small tattoo on her forearm, and wears an olive green sports top and leggings. Behind her are a grey armchair with a white throw, a low wooden shelf and a large potted plant, and a water bottle stands on the floor beside the mat. The Sekond Skin Society logo is in the lower right corner.

Two women sit on dark mats on a sunlit wooden studio floor, each in a seated twist. In the front, a woman with her brown hair in a ponytail, wearing an olive green sports top and leggings, sits with one leg extended and the other knee bent and drawn in, hugging the bent knee with her opposite arm and pressing her other hand into the mat behind her as she turns to look over her shoulder. Behind her, a woman with long, dark hair in a ponytail, in a rust red long-sleeved top and olive leggings, does the same twist. Tall windows, concrete walls and trailing green plants fill the background. The Sekond Skin Society logo is in the upper left corner.

A woman holds an extended side angle pose on a teal yoga mat in a bright studio with light wood floors. Her front knee is bent, her back leg stretches long behind her, and her lower hand rests on a black yoga block beside her front foot while her top arm reaches up toward the ceiling. She turns her head toward the camera. She has chin-length, curly, dark hair and wears yellow-tinted glasses, a black long-sleeved top, black pants and a black grip sock on her back foot. A white chair stands just behind her. White walls, two tall windows with pale blinds, a gold and cream painting of a seated Buddha and a wall-mounted TV are in the background.

Take a look inside

Here is a preview of one entry from the Movement Foundation Index: Fitness. Every one of the 115 exercises (and all 104 poses in the Yoga Index) is written with this depth, and the preview shows only part of the entry.

Preview one entry: Calf Raise (Seated or Standing Heel Raise)

Movement Foundation Index: Fitness, preview

Calf Raise (Seated or Standing Heel Raise)

At a glance
  • Plain language: Lifting your heels and lowering them back down, seated or standing
  • Category: Lower Body Strength / Ankle and Calf Strength / Balance
  • Equipment: A sturdy chair for the seated version. Optional: a wall, chair, or rail for balance, a step or block for extra range, dumbbells or a weight across the thighs.
Detailed sensory description (excerpt)

Seated: “You press the balls of your feet into the floor and lift your heels as high as you can, exhaling. You feel the lower part of your calf, deep under the bigger muscle, working. Your pressure stays over the base of the big and second toes.”

Standing: “You press down through the balls of your feet and lift your heels, rising as high as you can control. You feel the backs of your lower legs tighten and work. Your weight stays over the base of the big toe and second toe, rather than rolling out to the little-toe side.”

What you should feel (excerpt)
  • Strong engagement in: Gastrocnemius (upper calf muscle) and Soleus (deeper, lower calf muscle)
  • Throughout the movement: weight centred over the base of the big and second toes; slow, smooth lowering
Teaching scripts (in full)
Seated

“Sit tall in a sturdy chair, or with the brakes on your wheelchair, feet flat and hip-width apart.

Rest a weight or your hands on your thighs.

Press through the balls of your feet and lift your heels.

Pause at the top.

Lower your heels slowly to the floor.”

Standing

“Come to standing, feet hip-width apart.

Rest your hands on a support if you like.

Press through the balls of your feet and rise up tall.

Pause at the top.

Lower your heels slowly back to the floor.”

Adaptive variations (excerpt)
  • Amputees and limb differences, with a prosthesis: “Most prosthetic feet do not point actively, so the sound calf does the lifting while the prosthetic foot stays flat and shares some weight; this is a full version”
  • Larger bodies: “Lead with function: strong calves support walking, stairs, and balance”
Also in the full entry (not shown in the preview)
  • The complete sensory descriptions for both versions
  • What you should not feel
  • Adaptive variations for wheelchair users in the chair and on the mat, amputees and limb differences (upper and lower limb, with and without a prosthesis, residual limb care), larger bodies, shorter bodies, neurodivergent participants, and people living with chronic pain or mobility limitations
  • Muscles engaged
  • Purpose and functional benefit
  • Key alignment cues
  • Common errors
  • Contraindications and safety
  • Regressions
  • Progressions

Plus, in every Index: evidence-informed guidance on screening and when to refer, teaching virtually, and teaching every body, with full references.

A woman with a larger body, seen from behind against a plain warm beige backdrop, presses two black dumbbells straight overhead with her arms fully extended. Her bright pink hair is pulled back in a high ponytail, and she wears small hoop earrings, a cream cropped t-shirt and lilac leggings. She has a snake tattoo on one forearm and a small tattoo on the other upper arm.
